La règle de Rome est implacable. Un empereur romain ne peut s’unir à une femme étrangère. Ainsi, à la mort de son père, Titus doit choisir entre l’amour qu’il porte à Bérénice, la reine de Palestine, et son désir d’accéder au pouvoir. Bérénice perd ainsi l’homme qu’elle aime… « Cette pièce me paraît d’une actualité brûlante, confie Gaëtan Vassart. Comment accomplir nos rêves d’épanouissement personnel dans une société où le travail régit notre vie, où la réussite sociale nous impose ses lois, nous oblige sans cesse à un sprint au bord du précipice ? Comment pouvons-nous encore donner du pouvoir à nos rêves ? » Aux côtés de Stéphane Brel, Valérie Dréville (dans le rôle-titre), Sabrina Kouroughli, Anthony Paliotti et Maroussia Pourpoint, le comédien et metteur en scène souhaite ici éclairer la dimension politique de l’œuvre de Racine. Et ainsi rendre hommage, à travers son héroïne malheureuse, à toutes les femmes oppressées du monde.
