Quatre personnages, Lechy Elberno et Thomas Pollock Nageoire face à Louis Laine et Marthe, s’affrontent à travers L’échange. Qu’est-ce qui se jouent entre eux ?
Bernard Lévy : Dans cette confrontation, chacun devient le combustible de l’autre. Lechy Elberno, l’actrice, évoque l’indépendance et le théâtre ; Louis Laine, le jeune homme vagabond, quête un idéal de liberté et se dérobe à l’engagement ; Thomas Pollock Nageoire, l’homme d’affaires, ramène tout au commerce ; Marthe enfin représente la femme dans ce qu’elle a de plus raisonnable. Elle agit comme un révélateur de ce que ces êtres ignorent d’eux-mêmes, elle tend les liens complexes et les oppositions entre les personnages : la maman et la putain, l’idéalisme et le matérialisme, la réalité et la fiction, l’argent et l’amour, la jeunesse et la responsabilité… A travers une histoire simple, Claudel dépasse ces alternatives et trame une interrogation plus vaste sur le désir. Il touche des enjeux contemporains qui concernent des jeunes de vingt-cinq ans.
Vous aviez déjà mis en scène cette pièce en 1999. Pourquoi y revenir aujourd’hui ?
B. L. : Il y a une âpreté, une violence et une sensualité, voire un érotisme, dans l’écriture que j’aimerais faire entendre. La seconde version de L’échange mêle prose et verset, elle allie une grande hétérogénéité de ton et de langue, souvent occultée par la classique « musique claudélienne » qui traîne dans nos mémoire. Il faut gratter sous le vernis du souvenir, creuser chaque scène pour trouver une forme qui rende sensibles les enjeux de la pièce et fasse émerger les possibles, pour que le spectateur compose son parcours.
Claudel confiait dans une lettre en 1900 : « (…) c’est moi qui suis tous les personnages, l’actrice, l’épouse délaissée, le jeune homme sauvage et le négociant calculateur. » Comment abordez-vous ce quatuor avec les comédiens ?
B. L. : Nous avons travaillé au « ras » du texte, c’est-à-dire en nous appuyant sur les situations, en étant à la fois précis sur l’écriture et concret dans le jeu, sans banaliser la langue ni bien sûr la déclamer. Claudel instille le tragique dans le quotidien, le symbolique dans le concret. Il faut constamment trouver l’équilibre sur cette crête étroite. La poésie advient par les enjeux des scènes. Nous essayons de joindre l’intention portée par les versets et l’émotion ressentie intérieurement.
L’échange se déroule dans une Amérique à la fois réelle et fantasmée. Comment avez-vous pensé l’espace ?
B. L. : La scénographie est très cinématographique et me permet de faire des cadrages sur certaines scènes, avec des voix off. Elle emprunte aux visions de l’Amérique que le cinéma a inscrites dans les imaginaires. Elle montre aussi les artifices du théâtre, en pointant certains éléments du décor. Dans cette pièce remarquablement construite, Claudel parle aussi du théâtre. La mise en scène s’autorise une approche brechtienne qui dévoile la construction et trouble par moment l’existence du quatrième mur. Par ailleurs, comme souvent dans ma démarche, la musique définit un univers émotionnel. Elle croise ici les voix des Rolling Stones, de Tom Waits ou de David Bowie. La mise en scène est une équation à multiples inconnues, que j’essaie de placer sur la même portée pour créer une forme suffisamment riche afin de traiter les enjeux humains et plastiques, en mobilisant de façon harmonieuse toutes les dimensions scéniques.
