Pourquoi monter Olecha aujourd’hui ?
Bernard Sobel : Tout dépend toujours du jour où les questions sont posées. Aujourd’hui, elles sont à poser en rapport avec le tsunami civilisationnel que nous subissons et dont nous ne savons pas comment sortir : nos inquiétudes et nos interrogations doivent déterminer nos choix. Olecha vit à un moment et dans un pays où se passe une expérience d’une importance aussi grande que le phénomène que nous sommes en train de vivre. Son époque proclame que la collectivité et la masse comptent plus que l’individu. Il va chercher, en tant qu’auteur petit-bourgeois, héritier d’une certaine civilisation, à comprendre ce qui arrive. Monter les œuvres d’Olecha a sa pertinence aujourd’hui. Ce choix n’a rien de pittoresque. L’œuvre de ce poète interroge la civilisation et ce qui lui arrive quand elle passe d’un moment à un autre de son évolution : ce matériau nous paraît important par rapport à aujourd’hui. On peut faire usage des Grecs, des Elisabéthains, des romantiques allemands pour être utiles à notre temps et mettre à jour les questions que chacun se pose consciemment ou inconsciemment : il s’agit, à chaque fois, de trouver les métaphores opérationnelles qui donnent à nos contemporains le moyen de réfléchir à ce qui leur arrive. C’est ce qui a déterminé notre choix de monter Olecha.
Que raconte cette pièce ?
B. S. : D’une certaine façon, Olecha raconte l’histoire d’un homme prédécesseur de Mac Donald : l’histoire de Mac Do au pays des soviets ! Mac Donald s’offre aujourd’hui deux pleines pages dans la presse : il s’agit d’« en savoir plus sur les steaks hachés de chez Mac Donald » dit cette publicité. On peut mettre ça en rapport avec la fabrique de saucisson qu’invente « l’homme nouveau », Andreï Babitchev. Olecha attaque ce désir d’être utile à tout le monde, que reprennent aujourd’hui, en slogan, des entreprises comme Mc Donald ou Leclerc. Qu’est-il advenu aujourd’hui de ce rêve ?

Mais, plus précisément, qu’en est-il de l’intrigue ?
Michèle Raoul-Davis : Andreï Babitchev, libérateur des ménagères soviétiques par l’invention de la cuisine universelle, s’oppose à son frère Ivan, chantre de l’individualisme et messie du vieux monde qui prend la tête d’un complot pour une ultime manifestation des passions anciennes : une « conspiration des sentiments ». Entre les deux, hésite Nicolas Kavalerov, velléitaire et alcoolique, figure prémonitoire et autobiographique de l’auteur et, en même temps, figure d’Hamlet, déchiré entre ces deux hommes. C’est le frère constructeur du socialisme qui triomphe. L’autre, qui voulait que Nicolas-Hamlet tue Andreï, le constructeur du communisme, baisse les bras. Nicolas est fasciné par le révolutionnaire, il aimerait être le fils d’un père aussi séduisant, mais, en même temps, il ne parvient pas à partager sa vision des choses.
B. S. : Exactement comme Olecha, qui a le courage d’affirmer qu’il ne peut pas être dans le mouvement de l’Histoire et dont le poème, à partir du moment où il le dit, se trouve dans le mouvement de l’Histoire.
M. R.-D. : Olecha n’a jamais été dissident, mais est demeuré incapable de mettre son talent au service de l’Etat.
Que pouvons-nous trouver à penser chez Olecha ?
M. R.-D. : C’est une œuvre qui nous questionne et permet d’ouvrir à nouveau une réflexion sur l’avenir, une pensée de l’avenir. Mais c’est au spectateur de faire son travail ! Le personnage central est déchiré entre deux pulsions que notre monde a l’air d’avoir réconciliées : l’Etat providence cohabite avec la libération des ménagères et l’individualisme. Aujourd’hui, ces idéologies ont changé de visage. Le capitalisme s’habille d’oripeaux sociaux et les révolutions arabes sont des révolutions bourgeoises dont les réclamations, minimales, se limitent à vouloir vivre comme nous. Il est aujourd’hui urgent de rouvrir la pensée de l’avenir, sans se contenter des petits accommodements d’un système qui nous conduit à la catastrophe et dont la logique est celle de la faillite et de la misère.
