Il y a Stan puis il y a Monsieur. Deux hommes, deux figures antagonistes, deux voix ici incarnés par un seul interprète : Denis Lavant. Donnant suite à une lecture présentée la saison dernière au Lavoir Moderne Parisien — dans le cadre de deux mois de programmation consacrés à l’œuvre de Koffi Kwahulé — le comédien revient à ce texte qui fut pour lui une révélation, un texte mettant en présence deux personnages aux identités imprécises, aux rapports troubles et aux enracinements complexes. Qui sont, ainsi, les deux individus enfermés à l’intérieur de cette joute verbale, de cette opposition psychologique de toute évidence artificiellement déséquilibrée ? Qui sont ces deux personnalités jouant au bourreau et au condamné, à l’inquisiteur et à l’accusé, au tortionnaire et au souffre-douleur ? En choisissant de se faire face à soi-même, de prendre en charge seul les deux rôles de Big Shoot, Denis Lavant mène le spectateur vers une vision clairement schizophrénique de la pièce. Il le fait à travers toute la force suggestive, toute la puissance d’incarnation qu’on lui connaît, donnant à entendre les combats et les abîmes intérieurs d’un être solitaire, d’un esprit à la dérive.
Un face-à-face en solitaire
Cette version pour un seul comédien de Big Shoot semble en effet renvoyer aux errances de l’un de ces individus que l’isolement, la marginalité sociale, la fragilité psychique finissent par éloigner du monde réel. Un de ces individus qui ne trouvent, comme échappatoire à leur solitude, qu’une forme de claustration et de pérégrination mentales. Si Denis Lavant réussit aisément à illustrer cette idée de fuite imaginaire, il peine toutefois à détourner, à mettre à distance les stéréotypes psychologiques induits par le jeu de rôles liant les deux personnages. Davantage de ruptures, de silences, d’ouverture et d’ampleur scénographiques, auraient ainsi certainement donné une dimension supplémentaire à ce duel en trompe-l’œil. Car, en assistant à cette performance d’acteur certes de très belle facture mais parfois insuffisamment anguleuse, on réalise peu à peu que le regard d’un véritable metteur en scène manque à ce projet (Michèle Guigon signe la « mise en jeu » du spectacle). Un véritable metteur en scène qui aurait pu pousser Denis Lavant à creuser ses intuitions, qui aurait pu se nourrir de la singulière personnalité du comédien pour élaborer une représentation plus aérée, plus effilée, plus aventureuse.
