Les pigeons, puis les canaris : Birdy est tout à son rêve de devenir oiseau. L’hôpital psychiatrique qui le retient est aussi cruel qu’une cage. Pour aider Birdy à revenir dans le monde des hommes, on fait appel à Al, dont la gueule cassée par la guerre et l’amitié patiente et tenace vont l’aider à soigner ses blessures d’enfance. « Lequel de Al ou Birdy est le plus amoché ? Lequel des deux a le plus besoin de l’autre ? Voler, c’est beaucoup plus que battre des ailes… Birdy n’a rien perdu de sa force. Le film éponyme d’Alan Parker avait marqué mon adolescence. En quelques pages, j’ai eu la certitude que je pourrais réunir à la scène Al et Birdy. Phrase après phrase, les images de théâtre se formaient, nettes, précises, simples, effaçant ma mémoire de cinéma. », dit Emmanuel Meirieu, qui continue, avec ce spectacle, son travail d’adaptation théâtrale d’œuvres littéraires majeures.
