Lindy hop, fox trott, shim sham… ces mots déjà swinguent à tue-tête et forcent l’entrain des jambes par leur joie communicative. « En découvrant la fameuse scène de danse des lindy hoppers dans le film Hellzapoppin (H.C Potter, 1941), j’ai eu le désir d’aller visiter les danses sociales de la communauté afro-américaine des années 20/30. » confie Raphaëlle Delaunay. Formée à l’Opéra de Paris, elle s’est frottée notamment à l’art de Pina Bausch, Jiri Kylian ou Alain Platel avant de passer à la chorégraphie. Dans Bitter sugar, elle gratte sous le plaisir virtuose des danses jazz pour révéler les tonalités insolemment joyeuses qui s’échappent de ces années folles lézardées par la ségrégation. Loin de verser dans la nostalgique imitation, elle dégage l’essence de ce patrimoine et le relie aux mouvances actuelles du hip hop. Entourée de quatre danseuses en scène, elle mène cette revue comme « l’expression joyeuse et délurée d’une histoire au goût amer ».
