Cette pièce se situe dans une période très précise de la vie de Federico Garcia Lorca. Que s’y est-il passé ?
Un Poète à New York, c’est aussi le titre d’un recueil de poèmes inspirés par cette période. Lorca est parti à New York pendant un an, en 1929, et il a éprouvé un choc culturel. Venant de Grenade, il s’est retrouvé en plein krach économique dans une ville totalement différente. A partir de ce moment-là, son écriture a radicalement changé. En me plongeant dans ces textes, j’ai été troublée, car c’est une œuvre très noire, difficile à lire, pleine de symboles. Comment mettre en scène ces poèmes ? J’ai lu la série de conférences données à son retour et j’ai compris comment je devais traiter le sujet. Il y parle de sa rencontre avec New York, de son voyage, de ce qu’il a ressenti et de pourquoi il a écrit ces poèmes. J’ai abordé la pièce à travers son vécu, et non à travers les poèmes. J’ai décidé de narrer le voyage du poète, et à travers cette expérience personnelle, de ressortir les poèmes qui sont présents tout le temps par la musique et la voix.
Le rôle principal est porté par Andrès Marin, qui dans son travail personnel représente le renouveau du flamenco mais aussi une certaine abstraction. Pourquoi ce danseur ?
J’aime sa manière de concevoir le flamenco et sa façon contemporaine de danser. Je ne voulais pas faire un spectacle de flamenco, car pour parler de New York, il fallait pouvoir représenter la ville avec son mélange d’identités. Pour la danse, il fallait ce même mélange de cultures. Dans la pièce, il y a des danseurs de hip hop, des danseurs contemporains, et des danseurs de flamenco. Andrès est pour moi le plus apte à s’adapter dans une pièce qui n’a pas qu’un seul langage chorégraphique.

Vous êtes le deuxième soliste du spectacle. Qu’incarnez-vous ?
J’incarne les mots de Lorca. Je suis un personnage abstrait. Les dix musiciens sur scène mélangent le jazz et le flamenco, chanté par la grande Carmen Linares. Le flamenco représente le passé et les repères de Lorca, et le jazz plutôt New York. Le hip hop représente sa rencontre avec les noirs américains, pour qui il a eu beaucoup d’admiration.
Il y a une vingtaine de danseurs. Comment organisez-vous la pièce entre les solistes et le groupe ?
Je voulais beaucoup de danseurs car parler de New York sans avoir assez de monde me semblait inadapté. La rencontre entre Lorca et cette ville passe avant tout par l’énergie dégagée par ces danseurs, que je trouve fantastiques. Les chorégraphies de groupe, évoquant par exemple l’arrivée à New York, le krach boursier ou le stress de la ville, sont assez explosives, elles ne peuvent pas raconter la même chose qu’un pas de deux ou qu’un solo.
