De la naissance de Blanche Neige à l’agonie de sa belle-mère, le ballet n’oublie rien (ou presque) du conte des frères Grimm. Une fidélité assumée, et l’on se plonge dans Blanche Neige comme dans un livre d’histoire, suivant le fil des pages jaunies par le temps. Preljocaj en profite pour réhabiliter la véritable fin du récit, effacée de la mémoire collective par Walt Disney. Mais l’affaire s’arrête là, tout comme l’imaginaire du chorégraphe. Prenant trop au sérieux son rôle d’enchanteur, qui fait fonctionner les engrenages d’un ballet bien huilé, Preljocaj oublie bien vite qu’une grande œuvre est aussi une machine à transcender le réel, à dépasser l’image et l’imagerie pour porter un autre regard sur le monde. Il ne laisse à Blanche Neige aucune occasion de résonner ailleurs que dans l’illustration, et non l’interprétation, d’une histoire. L’on s’appuie alors sur toutes sortes d’inventions portées par la scénographie et les lumières – l’ellipse temporelle d’une fillette devenue jeune fille, le miroir magique qui joue savamment du réel et du figuré par un dédoublement des personnages, l’arrivée surprise des nains sur un plan vertical… – ou par de grandes scènes fédératrices – danses de groupe avec le bal, pas de deux d’amour ou de haine (le prince, la pomme)…
De la belle danse, toujours chez Angelin Preljocaj
On connaît et apprécie déjà le chorégraphe pour sa maîtrise gestuelle qui peut tout autant nous plonger dans l’abstraction comme dans la narration. Là où Empty Moves et Eldorado réussissaient à inventer des relations et des mondes inconnus, là où Annonciation et Roméo et Juliette parvenaient à transposer un imaginaire vers de nouveaux territoires, Blanche Neige se retrouve prisonnière dans la belle cage dorée du ballet. Ce genre, créé pour plaire, au service des puissants, a pris son véritable essor au XVIème siècle sous l’impulsion de Beaujoyeulx, qui affirmait « avoir contenté en un corps bien proportionné l’œil, l’oreille et l’entendement ». Comment cette maxime peut-elle résonner encore dans un ballet aujourd’hui et chez un tel créateur ? Blanche Neige contente, certes, mais ne se contente que de cela. Une bien pauvre idée de la danse, art du mouvement par excellence, mais du mouvement de l’esprit et du renversement des idées.
