Votre parcours de metteur en scène est lié à de nombreux auteurs vivants. Quel sens donnez-vous à votre engagement pour les écritures contemporaines ?
Serge Barbuscia : Comment ne pas s’intéresser à ce qui s’écrit aujourd’hui ? Comment ne pas regarder devant soi ? Le Théâtre continue à s’écrire, à se rêver avec des mots (des maux) d’aujourd’hui et j’éprouve la nécessité, le besoin de me confronter à ces écritures. J’aime à penser que les textes entendus pour la première fois seront peut-être les classiques de demain. Le théâtre, c’est du vivant, c’est de l’instantané.
Comment pourriez-vous caractériser la relation intime qui vous relie aux mots ?
S. B. : Je ne recherche pas en priorité les mots. On sait d’ailleurs que les silences, au théâtre, pèsent de tout leur poids. Souvent, c’est le thème qui m’intéresse. La plupart du temps, je commence à comprendre une pièce par sa musique, son rythme, puis ensuite je perçois sa projection pour enfin retrouver les mots, les phrases… Il est très difficile de définir par où tout cela passe : sans doute par une sorte d’instinct.

Qu’est-ce qui vous a décidé à mettre en scène Bats l’enfance ?
S. B. : L’équipe du Théâtre du Balcon et moi-même fréquentons l’écriture d’Adeline Picault depuis 2008. Nous avons invité à plusieurs reprises cette auteure pour des lectures de ses pièces. C’est dans le cadre de ces lectures que nous avons repéré Bats l’enfance. Quelque chose de particulier, de neuf se dégage de son écriture. Dans un style souvent syncopé, les mots frappent sec pour mieux nous livrer leurs personnages. Et les personnages sont d’aujourd’hui, près de nous. Dans Bats l’enfance, Adeline Picault alterne de longs monologues et des scènes dialoguées. Cette pièce traite des rapports conflictuels entre une mère et sa fille. Lyly est une adolescente qui rêve, comme toutes les filles de son âge, d’amour et de liberté. Elle est battue par sa mère. Mais ce n’est pas la mère qui frappe son enfant, c’est la femme. Leur séparation est inéluctable. Cette séparation résonne comme une délivrance, comme un deuxième accouchement procurant à la fois de la souffrance et du bonheur.
Pourquoi avez-vous souhaité faire intervenir un contrebassiste sur scène ?
S. B. : J’ai pour habitude de travailler les textes de théâtre comme des partitions. Au-delà du sens profond, je cherche les rythmes, les mélodies, les silences que les phrases elles-mêmes m’imposent. C’est dans ce découpage minutieux, où les mots laissent glisser le sens, que j’ai ressenti le besoin d’un troisième personnage pour compléter ce qui n’est pas écrit, pour affirmer, voire sublimer les silences. D’emblée, j’ai pensé à une contrebasse solo. Peut-être à cause de la forme de cet instrument qui rappelle l’apparence humaine, mais aussi à cause de sa taille, qui peut renvoyer au malaise que ressentent certains adolescents face à un corps qui grandit trop vite.
