Lilas et Ali n’ont que 12 ans lorsque l’indépendance de l’Algérie est déclarée, en 1962. A travers leur histoire, l’écrivaine Maïssa Bey nous fait parcourir les trente années qui séparent la fin de l’Algérie française de la victoire du FIS aux élections de 1991. Trente années durant lesquelles ces deux personnages vont s’aimer, se marier, fonder une famille, être les citoyens d’un pays déchiré entre les deux cultures qui ont participé à fonder son identité contemporaine. En demandant à Christophe Martin d’adapter ce roman pour la scène, Kheireddine Lardjam souhaite interroger l’histoire et la mémoire de son peuple. « A travers ce projet j’essaie de répondre à la question que les Algériens se posent aujourd’hui : qu’avons nous fait de nos 40 ans d’indépendance ? », explique-t-il. C’est dans ce « nous » que le metteur en scène souhaite inscrire les destins d’Ali et de Lilas, revisitant ainsi le passé pour tenter d’éclairer le présent.
