Issu d’une tribu touarègue, Bombino est né en 1980 dans un camp nomade situé à une centaine de kilomètres au nord-est d’Agadez, au centre du Niger. Depuis l’enfance, son existence a été marquée par la famine, les rébellions de son peuple contre le gouvernement militaire de Niamey, la répression exercée par ce dernier et les temps d’exil en Algérie, en Lybie ou au Burkina Faso voisins. La légende veut qu’il ait perfectionné son jeu de guitare, pendant les longues heures passées seul lorsque, encore berger, il surveillait son troupeau. « Découvert » en 2010 par le réalisateur américain Ron Wyman emballé par certains de ses enregistrements, Bombino a fait l’objet d’un film et d’un album qui ont lancé sa carrière internationale. Le pâtre est devenu, en 2019, le premier musicien nigérien nommé aux Grammy Awards. Ce Jimi Hendrix du désert, comme l’ont surnommé des journalistes à la formule facile, reste l’un des héraults les plus visibles des Touaregs dont il n’a de cesse de défendre les droits, avec autant de poésie que de détermination.
