Il a eu plusieurs vies. C’est peut-être aussi pour ça que sa voix, profonde et éraillée, véhicule autant d’émotions. Natif de l’Angola, Bonga a débarqué au Portugal à l’âge de 23 ans en tant que champion du 400 mètres. S’il opte ensuite pour la voie musicale, le garçon va se retrouver pris dans les événements historiques qui ont agité le Portugal et l’Angola des années 70. Bonga Kuenda est d’ailleurs son nom de guerre (puis de scène) contre la dictature salazariste (son patronyme à la ville : José Adelino). Son autre combat, l’indépendance de son pays de naissance, le forcera au départ : il ne rentrera au Portugal qu’à la fin des années 80. Il faut dire que ses deux premiers albums portaient des titres évocateurs (Angola 72 et Angola 74) et des chansons engagées, tel le célèbre « Sodade ». Popularisé par Cesaria Evora, il est devenu l’hymne tourneboulant des émigrés lusitaniens. Depuis, Bonga a acquis le statut de légende vivante adulée par des artistes comme Bernard Lavilliers ou Marisa Monte.
