De quels conflits s’agit-il ici ?
Boris Charmatz : Dans ses leçons, Roland Barthes définit le neutre comme le « désir de la levée des confits ». J’ai trouvé dans son approche un écho à la recherche que je menais sur une « chorégraphie immobile », sur ce que serait une installation de danse, sans début ni fin, dégagée des formats du spectacle, sorte de ronde de mouvements, sans cesse tournoyante mais qui pourtant ne progresse pas. Ce paradoxe entre la mobilité et la sensation d’immobilité de l’ensemble, comme les vagues se fondant dans l’immensité étale de la mer, m’intéresse.
Le conflit constitue classiquement l’un des moteurs du drame théâtral. Une installation appelle une dramaturgie particulière. Quel regard cherchez-vous à convoquer chez le spectateur ?
B. C. : Cette pièce travaille plus les nuances que les contrastes ou les tensions, plus les transitions que les oppositions franches. Elle fonctionne comme un canon chorégraphique : les vingt-quatre danseurs effectuent vingt-cinq mouvements tour à tour. Les gestes se forment peu à peu et finissement par s’imbriquer les uns dans les autres parce que nous oscillons de l’un à l’autre. Nous quittons un mouvement très progressivement pour entrer dans le suivant de manière tout aussi progressive. De fait, toutes les parties de la chorégraphie sont visibles en permanence simultanément. Au début, je croyais que les mouvements oscillants seraient légers, souples, petits, non fatigants. En réalité, durant les trois semaines de répétions à Rennes, nous avons développé collectivement des oscillations extrêmes, très physiques. La répétition, les jeux de balancier, les allers-retours, l’oscillation, la dépense énergétique produisent un peu l’effet d’une drogue sur le cerveau. Levée des conflits ressemble finalement davantage à une transe, tout en s’appuyant sur un travail formel, extrêmement précis et complexe dans les placements, les actions, le rythme. Cette pièce a des résonances politiques, sociales, historiques évidentes et sans doute finalement est-ce la plus dansée, au sens classique, que j’ai faite !
La position neutre et l’engagement politique posent deux termes a priori plutôt opposés. Comment les reliez-vous ?
B. C. : Barthes explique que le neutre est sa manière de chercher à être en phase avec les luttes politiques de son temps. Par nature, j’aime les contrastes, les confrontations. Le neutre me paraissait une recherche vaine, car l’individu est toujours dans un contexte, coloré par l’environnement et les gens. Mais Barthes tourne autour de ce qu’il définit comme le neutre et évoque en fait le désir de neutre. C’est cette tentative qui fait écho en moi. Par ailleurs, réaliser aujourd’hui une pièce avec vingt-quatre danseurs affirme un positionnement, car c’est une démarche artistique mais aussi un choix économique fou aujourd’hui ! Le neutre désignerait ce désir de trouver un endroit où la société peut s’épanouir dans un système collectif.
