On ne sait pas si, comme il le fait sur le disque qu’il vient de publier, enregistré en solo à la Philharmonie de Paris, Brad Mehldau improvisera, au cours de son concert à l’Espace Carpeaux, sur le thème d’une chanson des Beatles. On peut le parier, tant le pianiste aime se pencher sur des chansons connues et, au fil d’improvisations de longue haleine, les déconstruire pour édifier à partir de leur mélodie ou de leurs accords, toute une cathédrale de musique. Utilisant les thèmes comme des matrices, il déploie de longues séquences articulées les unes aux autres avec un véritable sens de la forme. Ses plongées dans le clavier durent parfois plus d’une dizaine de minutes – dans ces moments-là, plus rien ne semble exister d’autre que la musique qui surgit dans l’instant, s’échafaude sous nos oreilles et se disperse dans l’éphémère du concert. Nourri de la pratique assidue des grands compositeurs classiques, Brad Mehldau possède l’intelligence du contrepoint à un rare degré de complexité, un sens du tempo qui ne faillit pas, et une grâce dans le toucher qui donne le frisson.
