Fin connaisseur de la musique, des arts, plus généralement de la pensée du Grand Siècle, Brice Pauset a nourri sa nouvelle œuvre des lettres de Louise du Néant, mystique angevine et témoin de la « crise de la conscience européenne » qui se fait jour à la fin du xviie siècle. Confiés à une voix (celle de Salomé Kammer, très engagée dans le répertoire contemporain) et un piano (celui de Michael Wendeberg, ex-soliste de l’Ensemble intercontemporain), ces Exercices du silence poursuivent l’interrogation du monde et de l’âme que le compositeur a engagée dans son œuvre, souvent portée aux confins du dicible et du silence. Comme dans nombre de ses œuvres précédentes, Brice Pauset s’appuie dans ce monodrame en quatorze scènes sur un environnement d’informatique musicale élaboré avec Olivier Pasquet, « assistant musical » à l’Ircam.
