« Mon principal but a été de peindre la politique des Romains au dehors, et comme ils agissaient impérieusement avec les rois leurs alliés, leurs maximes pour les empêcher de s’accroître (…) », écrit Corneille dans sa préface. Monter Nicomède (1651) fait-il écho au débat actuel sur le bilan de la colonisation française,
voire aux guerres qui déchirent le Moyen-Orient ?
Cette pièce est la plus critique, la plus politique des cinq qui composent ce que j’appelle le « théâtre colonial » de Corneille. Elle montre l’arrogance de l’impérialisme romain envers les autochtones, ici turcs, personnifiée par un ambassadeur minable, petit fonctionnaire haineux et méprisant. Elle pointe aussi la corruption de l’Etat, dirigé par un roi lâche et servile, père de Nicomède, qui a choisi de collaborer avec Rome et craint l’héroïsme de son fils. Loin de verser dans le manichéisme, ce texte profondément noir et drôle laisse jouer la dialectique d’une réalité complexe traversée de contradictions. Si faire entendre les résonances avec aujourd’hui m’intéresse, je voulais toutefois éviter toute transposition simpliste avec la situation en Irak ou en Palestine.
Les intrigues du pouvoir mènent le récit. Comment Corneille traite-t-il de la question politique ?
Il envisage la politique, thème fondamental dans son œuvre, comme un sujet philosophique plus qu’idéologique. Il développe une réflexion sur le pouvoir, sur son bon ou mauvais usage, sur le désir qu’il suscite, sur les valeurs morales et les sacrifices qu’exige le service de l’Etat. Nicomède incarne la résistance et tente de redonner une dignité à son pays. Héros sans peur et sans reproche, à la fois intelligent et railleur, il se bat non pour imposer une idéologie mais pour un idéal de justice, de vérité, de grandeur et de générosité. S’autoriser à croire collectivement à un idéal le temps de la représentation : peut-être est-ce pour cela que nous faisons du théâtre ?

La pièce dévoile le théâtre de la politique, qui confine au grotesque. Elle met en scène une société du spectacle où chacun se dissimule dans le mensonge, où il faut savoir en permanence décrypter propos et comportements. Tout est miné ! Intrépide et cinglant, Nicomède démonte, au prix de la vie, les stratagèmes et le double-jeu des comploteurs. Corneille expérimente ici un style nouveau où le tragique se mêle au comique. Il ne cherche pas à susciter la crainte ni la pitié compassionnelle, mais l’admiration. Nous jouons avec cette machine de théâtre et y invitons le public, assis autour du plateau comme à une vaste table de débats.
Comment allier cette liberté ironique et le corset de l’alexandrin ?
« Je veux la liberté dans le milieu des fers » : la phrase, extraite de La place royale, définit exactement mon travail. J’aime la confrontation entre cette langue et la liberté du corps contemporain. Nous interrogeons beaucoup l’alexandrin pour faire affleurer les dessous du texte, pour sentir comment la pensée et les sentiments des personnages passent par un verbe qui exprime leurs pulsations existentielles. Le vers n’est pas un instrument de déclamation. Il faut le faire respirer, l’utiliser comme une arme ou une torche qui éclaire la situation et pousse la joute oratoire jusqu’à la jubilation.
