Dans la langue de Racine (1639-1699), superbe, fluide, brillante et saisissante, la passion du pouvoir atteint des sommets d’intensité et d’implacabilité. « J’embrasse mon rival, mais c’est pour l’étouffer »…Sur fond d’histoire romaine, avec tout ce que cela suggère comme démesure et complots, la pièce explore les rouages impitoyables d’une ambition politique qui se révèle et se concrétise de façon radicale, la résolution des conflits équivalant simplement à l’élimination totale de l’adversaire. Les personnages ici sont fameux : Britannicus, jeune héritier légitime d’un trône usurpé ; son demi-frère Néron, “monstre naissant“ que ses crimes vont couronner empereur – tel Œdipe mais en pleine conscience de ses crimes, il programme l’assassinat de son frère et de sa mère ; Agrippine, mère des deux hommes, bête politique et mère possessive qui ne supporte pas que Néron s’affranchisse de sa tutelle. Ce qui met le feu aux poudres, c’est l’amour soudain de Néron pour Junie, fiancée de Britannicus. L’amour est ici une sorte de “carburant radioactif“ (selon les mots justes du metteur en scène Jean-Louis Martin-Barbaz ) qui emballe le moteur du désir de pouvoir. Les comédiens jouent dans un décor “minimaliste, fonctionnel et banalement quotidien“. Il s’agit d’oublier la tradition au profit d’enjeux intemporels que le charisme et la personnalité de chacun font entendre. Un beau programme, aussi fascinant pour les acteurs que pour les spectateurs.
