« Britannicus est un récit à plusieurs voix, celui d’une émancipation », dit Philippe Lebas. Cette émancipation est celle de Néron, qui s’affranchit progressivement de tous ceux qui mettent un frein à ses désirs : Britannicus ; Agrippine ; Burrhus ; Narcisse ; Junie. « Tout est consommé, tout est consumé. Ne reste qu’un paysage en cendre que décrit le récit halluciné d’Albine. » Philippe Lebas raconte ce sacrifice incandescent comme s’il était Racine face à « un auditoire aristocratique et lettré » venu assister à la naissance du monstre. Sa voix s’infléchit et son jeu se transforme à mesure qu’il incarne les différents protagonistes de la tragédie, jusqu’à ce que Christine Joly le rejoigne au quatrième acte, pour jouer la mère abusive et abusée. Dans un espace inspiré par l’esthétique baroque, le comédien fait naître l’œuvre en même temps que ses personnages, et offre à voir la progression de la gangrène tyrannique sur le visage du pouvoir.
