Olivier Mellor : Nous aimons aborder des styles et registres différents, et retrouvons ainsi l’alexandrin dix ans après Cyrano de Bergerac. Mais nous tenons toujours à notre objectif de réaliser un théâtre populaire : notre Britannicus se destine à tous et notamment aux adolescents. Je me souviens d’un Britannicus qui m’avait énormément ennuyé au collège, donc je prends ma revanche ! Selon diverses sources historiques, Néron, Britannicus et Junie, qui est aimée des deux garçons, ont entre 15 et 17 ans. Les relations entre Néron et sa mère Agrippine, possessive et affamée de pouvoir, entre Néron et son demi-frère Britannicus ou entre Néron et les filles sont reliées à des problématiques universelles qui intéressent toute époque. Ce thème d’une jeunesse sacrifiée subissant la folie d’adultes avides de pouvoir me touche et résonne encore aujourd’hui. Dans cette tragédie, tout se règle dans le sang. Racine s’empare de personnages historiques et romance leur histoire, un peu à la manière d’une série qui exacerbe les conflits. Lorsque le spectacle s’achève, après la disgrâce d’Agrippine et la mort de Britannicus, et alors que Néron est abandonné à sa solitude mortifère, le pire est à venir, et là réside sans doute toute l’amplitude tragique de la pièce.

Comment avez-vous structuré votre mise en scène ?
O. M. : Nous accompagnons la langue et la poésie de plusieurs effets qui façonnent un univers singulier, visuellement très riche. Comme à l’accoutumée, la musique sera intégrée à la mise en scène, avec quatre musiciens mêlés aux spectateurs au plus près du plateau. Trois écrans vidéo feront écho à l’action avec des images illustratives ou décalées, des indications de temps, de lieux, de généalogie, certaines mises en valeur. Le dispositif trifrontal et une scénographie épurée qui au fur et à mesure de l’avancée des actes modifie les volumes permettent de troubler et transformer les points de vue. Et nous avons ajouté un personnage qui emprunte son texte aux autres protagonistes, une sorte de clown inquiétant interprété par un pilier de la compagnie, François Decayeux. Depuis quasi trente ans, nous défendons l’esprit de troupe, avec des comédiens aguerris, très investis, dont beaucoup sont présents dans nos diverses créations.
