Rien de plus banal que le désir de rendre un classique à sa contemporanéité pour tenter de le faire entrer en résonnance avec les problématiques de notre temps et lui permettre, ainsi, de rencontrer un nouveau public. Rien de moins facile. Les choix du metteur en scène Olivier Mellor, soutenus par ceux de Julia de Gasquet sur le plan dramaturgique, donnent lieu à cette entente renouvelée et espérée de la tragédie racinienne. Un déplacement du centre d’intérêt classiquement admis est à l’œuvre. Ce Britannicus reste toujours cette tragédie avec laquelle Racine met à jour les mécanismes conduisant à la naissance d’un monstre, en l’occurrence de ce monstre, figure du mal politique, que fut l’empereur Néron. Figure dont les coïncidences avec l’actualité ne sauraient échapper à personne. Mais il expose d’autres ressorts tragiques, dont ceux mis en évidence par la théorie du désir mimétique chère à René Girard. Néron, cet usurpateur, devenu César en devant tout aux crimes de sa mère Agrippine, spoliant son frère, héros éponyme de la pièce, désire, par-dessus tout, ce que Britannicus désire : Junie. Et Junie aime Britannicus. Le sort en est jeté.
Un sincère et total engagement
Le dispositif scénique, tri-frontal, autorisant chacun, à l’occasion d’un bref entracte, à changer de place, est à l’image de la démultiplication des points de vue autour desquels se noue la tragédie, donnant explicitement à voir le génie racinien qui les entremêle. Un portique, évocation des portes du palais impérial, occupe le centre du plateau, par ailleurs dénudé, accessoirisé de façon minimaliste selon les besoins de la scène. Ce dénuement scénique s’oppose à la sophistication des moyens vidéographiques mis en œuvre, ouvrant de nouvelles fenêtres destinées à éclairer les enjeux de la pièce. Cette louable volonté de visibilité trouve peut-être ses limites dans sa volonté elle-même. Mais ne boudons pas notre plaisir auquel participent les musiciens en live, acteurs comme membres du chœur, rythmant avec beaucoup d’à-propos la trame de la pièce. Et les comédiens eux-mêmes, qui portent leurs rôles respectifs avec engagement et sincérité dans le pur respect de la beauté lyrique et des transports poétiques liés à la forme de l’alexandrin.
