« Mon rôle exige souvent une attention sans faille aux détails, absorbant tout ce qui m’entoure comme source d’inspiration. L’instinct et les tripes jouent toujours un rôle. Mais plus important encore, je n’ai pas peur d’expérimenter des idées, de prendre des risques calculés et de repousser les limites. Les résultats sont généralement stupéfiants, émotionnels et édifiants. » Considéré comme l’un des plus talentueux artistes sud-africains, le danseur chorégraphe Gregory Maqoma inscrit son travail dans une démarche naturellement pluri-disciplinaire et résolument ancrée dans la réalité d’un pays marqué par des années de ségrégation. C’est dans ce cadre que le natif de Soweto, dont l’aïeul n’est autre que Chief Maqoma, un illustre chef xhosa qui s’est battu contre les colons britanniques dans les années 1840 et fut enfermé au bagne de Robben Island, où il mourut en 1873, revient à Paris pour présenter cette pièce inspirée par le vécu du Native Choir. Associé au compositeur Thuthuka Sibisi et à l’ensemble Aedes, il prend prétexte de l’histoire de ce chœur sud-africain qui parvint à surmonter le racisme et sut séduire la Reine Victoria, pour projeter des pistes de réflexion sur l’actualité de la nation dite arc-en-ciel, dans une création où les voix et les corps sont au cœur du dispositif.
