Entre le Ciné X’Tet et votre autre formation, l’X’Tet, est-ce rupture ou continuité ?
Bruno Regnier : Avec le Ciné X’Tet, je m’impose une contrainte de temps, celui du film : même s’il y a une improvisation du feu de Dieu, il y a un moment où je dois l’interrompre en fonction de ce qui se passe à l’écran. Dans le Ciné X’Tet, je n’ai aucune barrière de style. Par exemple, j’ai inséré un trio de clarinettes dans le style de Mozart, même si cela n’a peut-être rien à faire là ! Enfin l’orchestre est ici complètement acoustique alors que l’X-Tet garde une dimension orchestrale de masse tout à fait différente. Pour le disque (“The Mark Of Zorro” Jazz à Tout Va/Anticraft), nous avons fait une prise à l’ancienne, dans un théâtre avec deux micros seulement…

Le risque est-il de prendre trop de place au détriment du film ?
B. R. : Dans le cinéma muet existent des creux et des pleins. Au cours du film, l’orchestre a des places très différentes. Les musiciens doivent devenir des duettistes et non des accompagnateurs qui meublent le silence. Et justement, j’ai choisi ce Zorro [de Fred Niblo avec Douglas Fairbanks] pour faire advenir non plus un ciné-concert mais un concert-ciné. On y a beaucoup plus de place. Le film étant plus long, le spectateur n’hésite pas à quitter le film par moments pour être dans l’orchestre. Après quatre programmes sur Buster Keaton, j’avais envie d’aller toucher aussi un autre public, peut-être moins sensible au burlesque, mais avide d’aventures.
Avez-vous composé en pensant aux musiciens qui interpréteraient votre partition ?
B. R. : Le projet du Ciné X’Tet a un peu évolué depuis le début. Je m’étais dit : à chaque film, un nouvel orchestre. Après Steamboat Bill Jr., j’ai donc changé les musiciens, mais le nouvel orchestre m’a tellement emballé que je l’ai gardé. On se connaît depuis quatre ans déjà, avec une centaine de concerts et trois programmes différents à notre actif… Quand j’écris, ce sont vraiment eux que j’ai dans l’oreille, autant humainement que musicalement.
