Entre Desperate Housewives et les films de Cassavetes, la société que décrit John Cheever dans Bullet Park est celle de la banlieue pavillonnaire américaine, aux façades proprettes et aux gazons impeccablement tondus. Surnommé « le Tchekhov de la banlieue », John Cheever s’attache à montrer comment l’apparent bonheur de cette classe moyenne, consumériste et superficielle, cache des affres aux allures de gouffres… Les Nailles composent une famille unie et charmante. Pourtant, un matin, le fils, Tony, refuse de se lever et sombre dans la dépression. Le père se met à absorber des tranquillisants et la mère cherche un gourou pour soigner son enfant. Tout empire encore avec l’arrivée du voisin, Paul Hammer, « qui s’est donné comme but dans la vie de crucifier le rêve américain »… Sans cynisme, mais avec acuité, tendresse et humour, John Cheever explore la fragilité de ces êtres vacillants en pleine débâcle. Sous le regard de l’écrivain Laurent Mauvignier, les membres du Collectif Les Possédés éprouvent au plateau les intuitions de leur adaptation scénique. Deux parties composent le spectacle : la première suit les étapes de la dépression de Tony, la seconde concentre le récit sur une soirée à laquelle participent les principaux protagonistes du roman, lors d’un dîner où les Nailles invitent les Hammer. Puisant leur inspiration dans les romans de Cheever et chez d’autres écrivains américains, Les Possédés auscultent le rêve américain et son envers cauchemardesque.
