Leurs mots se frôlent, s’accrochent, souvent se croisent. Ils glissent dans les plis du souvenir, cherchent les sensations d’hier, les pensées froissées par habitude au fond du cœur. C’était à Naples, voici dix ans. Ils s’étaient rencontrés au caprice du hasard. Ou plutôt effleurés. « Vous avez dit que depuis vos plus tendres années vous aviez, dans votre for intérieur, l’impression d’avoir été destiné à quelque chose d’étrange et d’extraordinaire, une chose prodigieuse et peut-être terrifiante, qui devait vous arriver tôt ou tard ; quelque chose que vous pressentiez avec une certitude inébranlable et qui peut-être vous écraserait. » rappelle-t-elle. Entre eux, un lien secret s’était pourtant noué. Un amour qui ne se savait pas. Entre elle et lui, l’attente de « ça » avait scellé le silence. Ils s’étaient retrouvés ensuite à Weatherend, en Angleterre, avaient continué leur intime conversation. Ce « quelque chose » jamais n’était survenu… Il était là. Il ne l’avait pas vu. Ou trop tard. Quand celle qui avait partagé son secret présage s’était éteinte. La bête dans la jungle, histoire tragique qu’Henri James écrivit d’un trait en 1903, raconte cela… une vie manquée, aveuglée par trop d’égoïsme.
Double mise en abime
Elle, c’est May Bartam, c’est Nathalie Richard, comédienne. Lui, c’est John Marcher et c’est Gérard Watkins, comédien. L’auteur et metteur en scène flamand Jan Ritsema adapte la nouvelle de James et inscrit le récit dans les anfractuosités du présent, trame les souvenirs, les commentaires, les paroles des personnages et les réflexions sur eux, sur la situation. Les temps s’enchevêtrent, les lignes fictionnelles s’emmêlent et mettent les acteurs tantôt au cœur de la scène, tantôt en surplomb, entre incarnation et distanciation. Ça suit ainsi les circonvolutions de la pensée, qui avance à tâtons dans la mémoire, cherche à comprendre, questionne, s’aventure en son for intérieur, comme autant de tentatives de saisir un réel incertain, qui sans cesse se dérobe. Nathalie Richard et Gérard Watkins habilement jouent de cette double mise en abime. Sur un plateau nu, dressé telle une lande isolée, ils sont May et John, ils sont deux acteurs qui explorent un texte et leur rôle. Pourquoi Jan Ritsema brouille-t-il ce duo en sur-imprimant la bande-son de Viridiana de Luis Buñuel (1961) en bruit de fond ? Cet effet de mise en scène semble aussi inutile qu’insupportable.
