Ce spectacle a été conçu sur mesure pour l’ouverture de l’exposition « Splendeurs et misères. Images de la prostitution, 1850-1910 » du Musée d’Orsay. Nathalie Joly, dont on a suivi avec attention les très belles réinterprétations des chansons d’Yvette Guilbert, rend ici hommage, avec l’art consommé de la scène qu’on lui connaît, au répertoire démodé mais délectable du caf’ conc’ où le métier de chanteuse se confondait souvent avec celui de prostituée. « A la Belle Époque, l’excitation est à son comble dans les cafés concerts. Les diseuses développent l’art des inflexions pour échapper à la censure, multipliant les allusions à la sexualité. La frontière entre l’artiste et la courtisane, entre la grisette et la lorette, est aussi mince qu’est inépuisable le vocabulaire pour nommer toutes les femmes associées à la prostitution. Pierreuse, demi-mondaine, verseuse, gueuse, morphinée, syphilitique, mais aussi buveuse d’absinthe, amour saphique, dame entretenue qui préfère les vieux, tenancière ou petite bonne d’hôtel, sont les figures centrales des chansons que nous avons choisies » expliquent Nathalie Joly et son metteur en scène Jacques Verzier.
