L’ensemble co-dirigé par la claveciniste Céline Frisch et le violoniste Pablo Valetti doit son nom au café de la rue Sainte-Catherine à Leipzig. Fondé par Telemann puis dirigé par Johann Sebastian Bach entre 1729 et 1739, il accueillait les concerts de musique instrumentale et de cantates profanes donnés chaque semaine par les musiciens du Collegium Musicum. C’est en s’inscrivant dans l’esprit de convivialité et de bouillonnement qui fut celui de ce lieu extraordinaire que Café Zimmermann a vu le jour en 1998. Bach est naturellement au centre de son répertoire, mais le programme de ce nouveau concert au Théâtre de la Ville, principale tribune parisienne de l’orchestre, se plaît aujourd’hui à contourner la figure du Cantor pour mieux remonter aux sources de la musique instrumentale allemande. Au programme figurent des œuvres d’importants compositeurs germaniques du XVIIème siècle : Biber, Froberger, Rosenmüller, Schmelzer, Meder ou Pezel. Sous leur plume, l’instrument s’émancipe de la voix et s’invente un langage propre. Un monde musical émergent, que Café Zimmermann réactive avec une fièvre et une virtuosité jamais démenties, désormais applaudies unanimement par la presse internationale.
