Sans doute unique au monde dans son travail de création théâtrale équestre au long cours, avec les chevaux comme partenaires de chaque instant, Bartabas présente aujourd’hui Calacas. Il a su avec finesse et détermination développer dans ses spectacles un échange et une gestuelle exceptionnels avec ses chevaux, un véritable langage et un mode d’expression remarquablement évocateurs, qui célèbrent l’animal, qui questionnent aussi et remettent en cause la symbolique attachée à ce vieux compagnon de l’homme, présent au fil de son Histoire autant que dans son imaginaire collectif. Calacas prend appui sur la culture mexicaine à travers ses musiques et sa relation particulière à la mort, nourrie de tradition chamanique, de représentations de la mort joyeuses et exubérantes, lors de fêtes où « mort et vie, jubilation et lamentation, chanson et hurlement » se mêlent, selon les mots d’Octavio Paz. « Ce qui m’intéresse avec Calacas, c’est la danse macabre. » dit Bartabas. Il utilise ici le cheval pour son énergie vitale, tandis que l’homme paraît désincarné – figurant d’un ballet de squelettes. Créant une piste suspendue entre ciel et terre, au son des tambours des chinchineros – hommes-orchestres portant sur leur dos une grosse caisse -, des orgues de Barbarie et des fanfares mexicaines, Bartabas ritualise un carnaval endiablé, visuellement grandiose.
