Le spectacle de Bartabas, Calacas (les squelettes en mexicain), renoue avec la trame populaire et rustique du théâtre équestre Zingaro. Calacas offre une vision radieuse d’hommes et de chevaux – pardon, d’os et de chevaux -, dégagée de tout néo-mysticisme. La proximité brute de la mort est évoquée à travers les plaisirs éphémères de la vie, visuels et sonores, que le spectateur actif reçoit par le biais de mille sollicitations dont le jeu de deux pistes superposées, l’une centrale sur le plateau face au public et l’autre, circulaire, placée au-dessus de lui qui l’invite à lever le regard. Deux “chinchineros“, hommes – orchestres latinos, des personnages populaires, portent sur leur dos une grosse caisse qu’ils frappent avec des bâtons imitant des baguettes de batterie, avec en plus des cymbales actionnées à leur chaussure. Ils dansent, font des claquettes dans la fièvre rythmée de percussions endiablées. Ce sont des sculptures vivantes musicales, des installations mi-hommes mi-instruments. Plus bas, une tribu de dindons s’amuse de la compagnie de squelettes miniatures, des marionnettes à fil qui voltigent dans les airs avant de disparaître pour laisser place à la course circulaire de chevaux splendides dont la croupe est investie de squelettes. Ces restes humains portent un plumet rouge, des semblants d’officiers, à moins que ce ne soit une carcasse d’oiseau aux larges ailes ou bien une ombre osseuse de mariée voilée de blanc.
Loin de l’effroi
Parfois, une ballerine en chair, rappel de Degas, joue en cavalière avec un squelette rouge qui la harcèle, ou bien une écuyère danse, la tête en bas et les jambes en l’air. Des cavaliers voltigeurs au large crâne, à la face osseuse camuse, aux orbites vides et au sourire ricanant dessiné par deux mâchoires, s’élèvent au-dessus de la piste sur des chevaux de feu, ou bien descendent à ras du sol dans des mouvements de grâce. Un squelette longiligne fait avec humour quelques pas inspirés de Michael Jackson. Des manèges à double étage où culminent des squelettes sont hissés par des hommes encapuchonnés, et un évêque juché sur deux chevaux porte la croix du crucifié. Des farandoles de roulottes, des cavalcades, des chaînes, des rondes, des courses effrénées, des tirs au pistolet, des jeux de foire et un tournoiement de vertiges. Dans sa vision médiévale, la mort est le lot de chacun, qu’on soit prince ou laboureur. La farandole infernale désigne les morts qui entraînent les vivants vers le tombeau. Cette armée d’ossements fébriles est exploitée poétiquement, elle met avec délicatesse le spectateur en rapport avec sa finitude, ne parlant finalement que du souffle de la vie. Une promenade, un témoignage existentiel qui va au cœur de squelettes cliquetants, en goguette mexicaine, loin de l’effroi mortel qui paralyse.
