Rebelle sauvageonne, génie audacieux, folle insoumise, fantasque et fragile, mais aussi femme abandonnée, enfermée, martyrisée… Autant de mots collés sur Camille Claudel, qui fascine autant par son œuvre que par le désastre d’une existence brisée. Sans doute, même, reste-t-elle occultée derrière le sombre destin d’artiste maudite. « L’histoire de sa vie est celle de son œuvre », écrivait pourtant son frère Paul Claudel. Le metteur en scène Jean-Pierre Armand a puisé dans la matière toujours vive de cette œuvre puissante pour écrire une pièce qui dévoile le sculpteur au travail, en quête de la vie secrète, cachée au cœur de la pierre. « Ma passion est le théâtre. La sculpture n’est pas loin : le travail dans la pierre, dans la chair, triturée, fissurée, bouleversée… pour extraire au mieux le plus fort des sentiments, « l’espace du dedans »… », dit-il. Seule en scène, la comédienne Dominique Bru donne chair à cette destinée. Elle est l’artiste qui se souvient, étendue sur son lit, dans l’asile d’aliénés où elle vit recluse depuis trente ans… Son monologue intérieur nous entraîne dans ses méandres intimes, là où résonnent les voix d’Auguste Rodin et Paul Claudel, et les images projetées de sa fièvre créatrice aux lisières de la folie.
