Ils se sont croisés pour la première fois chez les Leiris en mars 1944. Ils se sont aimés le jour du Débarquement. « Tu es entrée, par hasard, dans une vie dont je n’étais pas fier, et de ce jour-là quelque chose a commencé de changer. J’ai mieux respiré, j’ai détesté moins de choses, j’ai admiré librement ce qui méritait de l’être. » Albert Camus est marié. Ils se séparent une première fois lorsque Francine Faure, l’épouse de Camus, le rejoint. Le 6 juin 1948, Camus et Casarès se croisent à nouveau, boulevard Saint-Germain. Ils s’aimeront jusqu’à la dernière lettre, datée du 30 décembre 1959, cinq jours avant la mort du philosophe. Jean-Marie Galey et Teresa Ovidio explorent le pays du Tendre cartographié par l’écrivain et la tragédienne et font mentir Roland Barthes : « D’une certaine manière – paradoxe exorbitant du langage –, dire je-t-aime, c’est faire comme s’il n’y avait aucun théâtre de la parole, et ce mot est toujours vrai (il n’a d’autre référent que sa profération : c’est un performatif). » Les deux comédiens arrachent l’amour au performatif pour en faire une œuvre.
