Comédie musicale ? Opéra ? Opérette ? Qu’importe ! La partition de Leonard Bernstein se défie des codes et s’en joue, à l’image de la personnalité riche et attachante du compositeur. Créée en 1956 à Broadway, un peu avant le succès planétaire de West Side Story, Candide a mis du temps avant de s’imposer sur les scènes d’opéra. C’est pourtant un hommage enlevé à Voltaire, convoquant les thèmes chers au philosophe des Lumières – l’intolérance, la fanatisme – en même temps que son ironie. Dans cette nouvelle production, la distribution est emmenée par de jeunes interprètes, notamment le ténor Andrew Stenson dans le rôle de Candide et la soprano Ashley Emerson dans le rôle pyrotechnique de Cunégonde, dont on attendra avec impatience le fameux « Glitter and be gay ». James Lowe sera à la baguette tandis que la mise en scène est confiée à Francesca Zambello, qui, si elle n’est pas réputée pour son inventivité, sait occuper tous les espaces d’un plateau.
