L’entrée – tardive – du premier grand opéra de Paul Hindemith (1926) au répertoire de l’Opéra de Paris avait été saluée en 2005. En confiant sa réalisation à André Engel, l’Opéra ne s’était pas trompé. Rien ne semble en effet plus stimuler le metteur en scène que de recoudre des narrations souvent éclatées, comme l’attestait encore la récente reprise du Rake’s Progress de Stravinsky au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. L’histoire de l’orfèvre jaloux de ses créations, qui frôle à maintes reprises le fantastique (ce que traduisent bien les superbes décors et lumières de Nicky Rieti et André Diot), voit souvent la musique prendre le pas sur le texte. L’excellent chef Kazushi Ono, futur directeur musical de l’Opéra de Lyon, succède à Kent Nagano dans la fosse, et, sur scène, Franz Grundheber s’empare du rôle-titre – Cardillac, solitaire meurtrier, a finalement beaucoup à voir avec Wozzeck, rôle favori du baryton allemand.
