C’est bien l’héroïne de Bizet et de Mérimée qui est à l’honneur ici. Passée à la moulinette de l’adaptation de Louise Doutreligne et de la mise en scène de Jean-Luc Paliès, l’histoire devient un flash-back raconté par Don José, à l’aube de son exécution pour le meurtre de la belle. Entre la prison et le tablao flamenco, le drame se rejoue : le personnage de Carmen est à la fois chanté et dansé par deux interprètes différentes, qui symbolisent, dans ce spectacle, la jonction entre l’art du flamenco et l’opéra. Piano et guitare live, chant lyrique et chant flamenco (porté par Luis de La Carrasca, qui sait soulever son art hors de ses frontières), sans oublier la danse, nous voici devant un spectacle total qui relève d’un véritable défi. Succès public du festival off d’Avignon en 2017, c’est une version accessible mais profondément respectueuse du drame et de ses personnages que nous voyons ici, au plus proche de l’âme gitane de Carmen.
