Quinze ans après son premier album, intitulé Ess ê nha nha Cabo Verde, où la chanteuse donnait d’emblée le ton d’une couleur mêlant la musique traditionnelle du Cap-Vert, le jazz et la soul, Carmen Souza est toujours là et signe un album important. The Silver Messenger se présente comme un hommage au pianiste et compositeur de jazz Horace Silver (disparu en 2014). La chanteuse et ce grand maître du jazz ont en commun d’avoir grandi dans la culture capverdienne sans être nés pour autant, comme leurs parents, dans l’archipel africain : Horace Silver en 1924 à Norwalk, tout près de New-York, et Carmen Souza à Lisbonne… « En grandissant, j’écoutais beaucoup les disques de mon père, qui étaient principalement de la musique instrumentale du Cap-Vert. Quand j’ai écouté Horace Silver pour la première fois, j’entendais la même vibration, le même swing, la même intention, la même harmonie et mélodie, des mouvements familiers, des cadences, des changements d’accords, je pouvais entendre le son de mon enfance, mais avec une texture et un parfum différents, c’est-à-dire du jazz. » confie la chanteuse et guitariste qui signe avec cet opus un double hommage à ses racines et à l’universalité de la musique. Avec Theo Pascal à la basse, complice de longue date, Elias Kacomanolis à la batterie et Ben Burrell au piano.
