La pénibilité du travail et l’asservissement au rythme des machines, les brutalités et les humiliations du chef d’atelier, les rivalités, les mesquineries et les lâchetés, les batailles pour faire valoir ses droits, les grèves, la constitution du syndicat, les rires, les plaisanteries et la camaraderie : Edmonde Franchi a recueilli la mémoire des cigarières de la grande manufacture marseillaise et retrace un siècle entier passé par des générations de petites et humbles Carmen à fabriquer des cigarettes. Rendant justice et mémoire à ce prolétariat en jupons, la pièce d’Edmonde Franchi se veut populaire dans sa forme autant que dans son objet, exigeante, combative, joyeuse et généreuse. Jalonnée par les interventions des choristes de l’Académie de Chant Populaire dirigés par Alain Aubin, la mise en scène d’Agnès Régolo est réglée au cordeau et fait alterner grands tableaux et scènes plus intimistes avec rythme et entrain. Monologues et dialogues, personnages et allégories : la narration avance comme à l’association libre selon le fil du temps qui est aussi celui de l’histoire ouvrière du siècle passé. CarmenSeitas ressuscite « la chaleur d’un héritage » pour y « puiser une force qui parfois nous manque », celle de la dignité, de la solidarité et de la fraternité dans le labeur et la lutte.
