C’est dans la loge d’une actrice que se tient l’action : les comédiennes de théâtre peuplent volontiers l’imaginaire de l’homme de cinéma Jean Renoir. Carola est l’héroïne sur le plateau de la pièce éponyme, mais elle est aussi la protagoniste d’une autre pièce qui se joue à l’extérieur, sur la scène. La fiction s’épanouit lors de cette représentation que nous ne verrons pas tandis que le parterre de la salle est constitué d’officiers allemands. Pour la troupe du théâtre – l’habilleuse (Brigitte Belle), le concierge (Alexis Perret), la jeune actrice Josette (Claire Lamarre), le vieil acteur (Jean-Claude Penchenat), la partie n’est pas facile d’autant que le directeur collaborateur (Gérard Chatelain) joue complaisamment les compromis pour sauver à la fois son théâtre et celle qui en est l’âme, Carola. Un jeu de va-et-vient et de cache-cache avec des hommes peu appréciés, vu leur statut d’occupant.
Suspens, attente, effroi et peur, des sentiments mêlés d’humour et de bonne humeur affleurent.
Dans Le Chandelier de Musset, Carola (Marie Matheron) interprète une femme aimée de trois hommes, la stricte reprise à la ville de sa situation personnelle. Un jeune résistant (Alexis Jacquin), traqué par la Gestapo et admiratif du talent de la belle, pénètre imprudemment dans la loge interdite et doit malgré lui se cacher. Il tente d’échapper à un membre zélé de la Gestapo (Yoann Parize) et d’un policier allemand (Daniel Carraz). Or, l’ex-amant de l’actrice, un général allemand mélancolique (interprété par l’intensité de Didier Garreau) survient suivi de son officier d’ordonnance (Wieland Amand). Une atmosphère de Dernier Métro, film de Truffaut inspiré du scénario de Renoir. Le théâtre de Penchenat est fidèle aux tensions qui bouleversent les personnages, pris dans un sombre hiver quotidien – saisonnier et historique. Suspens, attente, effroi et peur, des sentiments mêlés d’humour et de bonne humeur affleurent confusément. Saluons une réponse vivifiante à cette volonté de théâtre populaire à laquelle s’est toujours tenu le metteur en scène du Bal ou de 1, place Garibaldi. L’espoir et les larmes du mélo saisissent le spectateur dans un élan qui pourrait toutefois gagner en poétisation.
