Cette 4e édition de June Events met à l’honneur Meredith Monk. Que représente-t-elle pour vous ?
Carolyn Carlson : Meredith Monk est une artiste totale, qui échappe aux catégories : compositeur, chorégraphe, réalisatrice, pédagogue… Elle est « tout » ! Nous avons énormément de chance de l’accueillir, et de découvrir Girlchild revisited, la reprise d’un solo mythique. J’ai vu ce solo lors de sa création, en 1972 : je n’en croyais pas mes yeux. Cette artiste incarne la liberté de toute une génération – celle de Philip Glass, Lucinda Childs, Steve Reich… – qui s’est lancée dans une expérimentation sans limites, sans aucune censure. Dans un film sur son travail, Meredith livre une parole dont je me sens proche : elle dit que l’artiste a la responsabilité d’ouvrir quelque chose dans l’imagination des gens. C’est une pensée que je trouve très simple et très belle. On sait que notre action est limitée, à l’échelle d’un monde qui va mal, mais quand on danse – ou quand on conçoit un festival – l’enjeu est là : qu’à la sortie du théâtre, quelque chose ait changé dans ce que voient les gens, dans ce qu’ils perçoivent…
Tout en accueillant plusieurs artistes qui font figure de maîtres aujourd’hui, June Events parvient à mettre en lumière des chorégraphes moins connus, voire de très jeunes artistes.
C. C. : Je suis heureuse que nous ayons mis en place des « premières parties », qui vont permettre à des compagnies émergentes – Yuko Kominami, Kaori Ito, Jesus Sevari, La Macana, Delphine Caron, Les Gens de… – de présenter leur travail lors des mêmes soirées que des artistes très connus. Nous avons également mis en place, dans le cadre de l’Année France-Russie, un focus sur la scène chorégraphique russe : on voit des reconstitutions des Ballets Russes, mais on a rarement l’occasion de découvrir la création actuelle ! Nous recevons Olga Pona, pionnière de la danse contemporaine russe, ainsi que deux tout jeunes chorégraphes. Par ailleurs, June Events est l’occasion de présenter le travail de plusieurs compagnies que l’Atelier de Paris accompagne tout au long de l’année, notamment Juha Marsalo et Rosalind Crisp, artistes associés. Eva Vandest et Rosalind Crisp ont bénéficié d’une résidence grâce au soutien du Conseil régional et du CDC Paris Réseau : elles ont ainsi pu faire un travail technique dans de très bonnes conditions au Théâtre du Chaudron. Chacune d’elles présente une création, de même que Johanne Saunier (Musée en chantier, « pièce pour mouvement et voix ») et moi-même (At the beginning of forever, interprété par Sara Orselli).
Vous présenterez aussi des « poetry events » : qu’entendez-vous par là ?
C. C. : Je considère mon travail comme de la « poésie visuelle ». C’est une expression plus claire que celles de « chorégraphie » ou de « danse », qui suscitent beaucoup de malentendus (les gens ont en tête une idée de la danse qui est rarement la vôtre !). J’ai été formée par Nikolais, qui travaillait le mouvement mais aussi le costume, la lumière, le film : peut-on le qualifier strictement de « chorégraphe » ? On peut aussi penser à quelqu’un comme Maguy Marin. Elle prend de vrais risques, elle crée des ponts nouveaux, et face à ses spectacles, certains spectateurs hurlent : « Ce n’est pas de la danse ! » Les poetry events, précisément, sont des moments de rencontre entre les expériences et les arts. Je conçois l’un d’eux, intitulé Spiritual Journey, avec le poète Alejandro Jodorowsky, en relation avec les tableaux de la peintre Pascale Montandon. L’autre event réunit le metteur en scène Philippe Adrien, directeur du théâtre de la Tempête, et le musicien Kudsi Erguner. Nous travaillons autour de textes de Nâzim Hikmet, poète turc. La « poésie visuelle » répond à sa « poésie textuelle »…
