On ne sait rien encore en détails, mais déjà tout de l’essentiel de ce concert exceptionnel en forme de Carte Blanche à notre « Baïlador » de la clarinette. A presque 80 ans, Michel Portal reste égal à lui-même, n’oubliant rien de son background musical : du jazz américain, des Caraïbes, de Mozart, du Free jazz, de Boulez ou de Kagel, de la chanson, des musiques qui font danser et encore moins du vertige de l’improvisation et de la fièvre de la rencontre. « Quand j’étais étudiant au Conservatoire de Paris, j’allais déjà jouer dans les clubs de jazz. On me qualifiait alors de « fantaisiste ». On essuie un certain nombre de critiques quand on touche un peu à tout. Mais pour moi, ça n’a fait que m’enrichir. Quand je joue du Mozart, certaines phrases me rappellent des valses-musettes de musique populaire, et parfois, dans Bach, j’imagine l’accompagnement d’une contrebasse jazz. Pour autant, même si je croise les genres, j’essaie toujours de garder le style de chacun : je ne vais pas faire du Mozart jazz. Aujourd’hui, j’apprécie que les musiciens soient plus ouverts, plus curieux et moins enfermés dans les ghettos de la musique » nous confiait récemment Michel Portal.
