Sur fond de fête foraine clinquante mais désenchantée et de crise économique privant les gens de travail et de foi en l’avenir, Casimir et Caroline (1932) d’Odon von Horvath (1901-1938) met en scène une société privée d’utopies, une jeunesse qui se cherche et se laisse à l’occasion bercer d’illusions. La fête débride les esprits, les couples se font et se défont, l’argent et les impératifs économiques jouent un rôle déterminant dans les relations entre les personnages. « Ma seule ambition est de peindre le monde tel que, hélas, il est. » a dit l’auteur. Leyla-Claire Rabih, qui adapte la pièce avec Marianne Costa et la met en scène, entend débarrasser le texte de tout ancrage historique pour interroger ses résonances actuelles dans notre société du spectacle omnipotente, caractérisée par l’emprise d’un monde économique et financier en crise et l’absence d’utopies.
