En 1930, La Décision (Die Maßnahme), fut créée par trois chœurs de travailleurs berlinois. L’engagement communiste du dramaturge et du compositeur y est à l’œuvre, mais d’une façon complexe, sinon ambigüe. Mise en abyme, cette pièce qui n’est ni complètement un opéra ni vraiment un oratorio, raconte comment un groupe de jeunes communistes a dû exécuter l’un des siens, qui prônait une révolte immédiate pouvant compromettre la révolution à venir. « Pièce didactique », La Décision est conçue comme une expérience introspective pour ses propres interprètes. Le public n’est alors plus simple spectateur, il est celui que la question posée peut transformer à son tour. C’est là l’un des enjeux de la mise en scène d’Olivier Fredj.
