C’est à même la peau du réel que Lia Rodrigues façonne sa danse. Installée dans une favela de Rio de Janeiro, la chorégraphe trace sa ligne de conduite artistique et politique, exigeante et engagée. Brutes, dépouillées de tout artifice, tendues sur la réalité vécue par les danseurs, ses pièces frappent par leur engagement généreux et leur recherche plastique. Avec Ce dont nous sommes faits (2000), pièce qui l’a révélée en France, l’artiste brésilienne met les êtres à nu, sculpte la masse humaine et l’explore sous tous les angles jusqu’à brouiller les frontières de l’identité. Prolongeant un « chantier poétique » qu’elle a mené avec sa troupe sur l’énergie nécessaire à l’élaboration d’un territoire créatif, Pororoca (2009) questionne la rencontre avec l’autre et le possible être ensemble. Sur le plateau, les individualités se dessinent, s’affirment, tout en traçant peu à peu les contours d’un collectif. Pororoca, titre venant du tupi, une des langues des indigènes brésiliens, et désignant un phénomène naturel produit par la confrontation des eaux du fleuve avec celles de l’océan, décline les infinies variations inspirées par le frottement du singulier et du pluriel.
