Pas de pire aveugle que celui qui refuse de voir. A ceux qui revenaient des camps de concentration soviétiques et témoignaient du caractère barbare du totalitarisme communiste, on a longtemps opposé un silence scandalisé, en les accusant de mensonge voire de folie. En France, on refusait l’idée que le parti martyr des cent mille fusillés puisse avoir un grand frère sanguinaire. L’œuvre de Jacques Rossi ne fut éditée qu’en 1995, trente ans après son retour de déportation, et son témoignage a subi pendant longtemps la loi de l’omerta idéologique dont furent victimes avant lui ceux qui dénoncèrent les errements de la machine despotique à visage humain. La force de ce témoignage brut et précis, pétri d’humour et de décence, tient surtout au fait que Rossi reconnaît lui-même avoir construit les conditions de son illusion, longtemps persuadé de la pureté de la cause qu’il servait et du bien-fondé de ses dérives liberticides et paranoïaques. Rossi ne se contente pas de dénoncer mais analyse et expose de manière époustouflante les fondements de la servitude volontaire.
L’illusion au service de la vérité
La mise en scène de Judith Depaule joue très habilement de la perversion et du détournement propres au système disséqué par Rossi. Instaurant un état de contrôle et d’enfermement, la petite boîte immaculée dans laquelle s’installent les spectateurs a tout de l’intérieur d’un réfrigérateur glacé. Pupitres, bancs, murs quadrillés et éclairés par une lumière blafarde, écrans où sont projetées des séquences documentaires entrecoupées par la représentation angoissée des traces mnésiques du survivant : le public, casque stéréo sur les oreilles et chaussons prophylactiques aux pieds, occupe une position complexe puisqu’il est observateur, complice et juge de la parole rapportée par un conférencier à la fois professeur et vrai faux témoin. L’installation dans laquelle se déploie le récit de cet itinéraire d’un enfant du siècle, fervent communiste, agent du Komintern relégué dans le septentrion concentrationnaire pendant vingt ans pour espionnage, offre les conditions d’une empathie qui évite les pièges lacrymaux. L’implacable démonstration de Rossi est servie par Judith Depaule avec un talent et une intelligence du texte et de la scène rares et jouissifs.
