Le climat est d’une obscurité radicale. De temps à autre percée par des défilés de flambeaux ou des effets de projecteurs, la représentation bifrontale créée par Fanny Mentré place les spectateurs de Ce qui évolue, ce qui demeure face à un univers opaque. Un univers sans véritable évidence, sans saisissement, au sein duquel vingt-sept scènes nous ramènent au milieu du XVe siècle, parmi une communauté monastique sur le point de s’ouvrir à l’imprimerie. Personnage principal de cette fresque faisant s’entrelacer – comme souvent chez Howard Barker – toutes sortes de thématiques et de réflexions (la modernité, la tradition, la beauté, l’isolement de l’artiste, le sacré, l’inanité de l’existence, la spécificité de l’œuvre d’art, l’élitisme…), un jeune copiste surdoué nous entraîne dans une course effrénée vers l’absolu. Pour qui ne connaît pas l’œuvre de l’auteur britannique, il est bien difficile – au vu de ce spectacle poussif – d’envisager la complexité et la hauteur du théâtre de Howard Barker.
Une mise en scène sans point de vue
Pour saisir la singularité de ce théâtre, mieux vaut lire le long texte que Fanny Mentré signe au sein du Journal publié par le Théâtre national de Strasbourg (TNS)*. « Barker écrit des vagues, note-t-elle. Pas de ponctuation, pas d’enfermement des mots, un déferlement, parfois interrompu par la parole d’un autre personnage, par une autre vague qui submerge la première, mais elle revient, par en dessous, réapparaît, ou pas. Pour moi, c’est cela, ce texte, c’est beau, c’est évident comme la mer (…) C’est complexe, c’est indiscernable, ça ne rentre dans aucune case, ça caresse et ça submerge. »Meilleure dramaturgeque metteure en scène, Fanny Mentré analyse l’œuvre de Howard Barker avec finesse. Elle s’enthousiasme pour cette écriture – écriture exigeante qu’il n’est pas rare de voir réduite à une expression de platitude et de réalisme narratif. C’est l’écueil dans lequel tombe cette première création de Ce qui évolue, ce qui demeure. Lesté par une mise en scène sans point de vue et une distribution sans inspiration (principalement composée de comédiens de la troupe du TNS), ce spectacle laisse l’impression inconfortable d’échapper au théâtre.
