A voir les spectateurs debout, hurlant à tout rompre en prenant des photos avec leurs téléphones portables, on pourrait se croire à un show d’une star de rock. Mais en ce dimanche d’octobre, c’est une chanteuse lyrique qui est sur la scène de la Philharmonie de Berlin pour un programme de musique baroque. Comment expliquer le « phénomène » Cecilia Bartoli ? Souriante, théâtrale, la mezzo-soprano italienne est toujours dans la communication, que ce soit avec le public ou avec l’orchestre (ici La Scintilla, l’excellent ensemble sur instruments anciens de l’Opéra de Zürich, qui sera remplacé à Paris par Il Giardino Armonico). On ne peut aussi que saluer sa virtuosité incendiaire et toujours espiègle. Dans les airs plus lents, c’est la souplesse de son legato et la suavité de son timbre qui forcent l’admiration. La diva manquait toutefois de projection dans la salle gigantesque (2400 places !) de la Philharmonie de Berlin, nous obligeant à tendre parfois l’oreille pour percevoir certaines vocalises.
Partitions oubliées
Le plus remarquable, c’est que Cecilia Bartoli ne joue jamais la carte du succès facile, en interprétant les tubes du répertoire lyrique. Dans ses récitals, elle préfère nous faire découvrir des partitions tombées dans l’oubli, exhumées grâce à un travail de fond mené avec différents musicologues. Cette fois-ci, elle remet au goût du jour les airs écrits pour les castrats par Nicola Porpora, Antonio Caldara ou encore Leonardo Vinci. Une plongée dans le Settecento italien, où l’émotion la plus intérieure côtoie le panache le plus incandescent. Parmi la pléthore d’airs, on signalera celui du Siface de Porpora (avec ses fanfares impressionnantes de cors), de La morte d’Abel de Caldara (à l’intimité bouleversante) et de la Berenice de Francesco Araia (les ornements les plus virtuoses du concert !). Finalement, le succès public de Bartoli est logique : toujours soucieuse du respect du texte musical (travail sur les partitions d’époque, accompagnement sur instruments historiques), elle arrive même à recréer les triomphes réservés à l’époque baroque aux Farinelli et autres célèbres castrats.
