Cédric Gourmelon met en scène Liberté à Brème de Rainer Werner Fassbinder, en souhaitant s’éloigner de son contexte d’origine, l’Allemagne conservatrice du XVIIIème siècle. « Il nous faut tenter d’atteindre une forme non naturaliste, à la fois âpre, directe et métaphorique, qui caractérise toute cette partie de son œuvre au cinéma (celle des 15 premiers films) », explique-t-il. Il confie à Valérie Dréville le rôle principal de Geesche qui élimine tous ceux qui font entrave à sa liberté – quinze personnes au total, depuis son mari tyrannique (François Tizon) jusqu’à son frère (Gaël Baron), en passant par son père, son amant ou encore une amie (Nathalie Kousnetzoff). Divisé en dix-sept courts tableaux qui s’achèvent presque tous par un meurtre, Liberté à Brème offre pour le théâtre une structure efficace et de nombreux espaces ouverts à l’interprétation.
