Qu’est-ce qui vous touche dans cette plongée cathartique ?
Célie Pauthe : O’Neill écrit avec les souvenirs sombres de sa propre histoire familiale. La sincérité avec laquelle les personnages se disent tout, le courage avec lequel ils affrontent ensemble leurs propres contradictions, leur mauvaise foi, leurs mensonges, leurs rêves brisés, leur besoin d’amour impossible à rassasier, m’ont profondément touchée. Ils ne se lâchent jamais. Chacun est coupable et innocent, méprisant, aimant, plaignant l’autre, comprenant et ne comprenant pas du tout, pardonnant mais condamné à ne jamais pouvoir oublier. Sans juger ni régler des comptes, O’Neill restitue le spectre complet des passions, des abîmes, des combats, créant un mouvement dramatique d’une rare intensité. Chaque affect est saisi dans sa plus grande fragilité, complexité, voire confusion. Pulsions de mort et de vie y sont indissociables.
Quelles questions résonnent pour vous ?
C. P. : Cette œuvre aborde les questions de l’héritage, du deuil et de la survie. L’histoire est celle d’un homme qui convoque ses propres morts et engage avec eux un long débat motivé par une question sous-jacente : à quelle fatalité, à quelle malédiction faut-il sans cesse s’arracher pour survivre, pour tenter de devenir soi, de s’inventer soi-même à travers le poids de l’héritage complexe dont nous sommes tous bâtis ?
La littérature hante également constamment cette maison…
C. P. : Ce qui rassemble aussi ce quatuor familial, c’est l’art. Ils sont ou se sont tous rêvés artistes : acteur, poète, musicien. En tressant à la sienne les voix des auteurs qui hantèrent cette famille, O’Neill construit peu à peu l’étrange chant à plusieurs voix qu’est le quatrième acte, d’un lyrisme saisissant, comme s’il réinventait son art au cœur du naufrage, y puisant une grâce, une pulsion de vie inespérée, une paradoxale renaissance. Cette façon de transmuer l’angoisse et la perte en poésie, en beauté m’émeut infiniment. Si elle ne guérit pas, ne résout rien, ne se berce d’aucune illusion, elle a du moins un fort pouvoir consolateur. Elle contient la leçon même des poètes, ce en quoi ils nous aident à vivre, dans cette capacité à mettre à nu les champs de bataille qui nous traversent, à les cerner au plus juste, et à lutter en y puisant la matière contre la mélancolie et les forces de mort.
