Pour l’imaginaire collectif, Johann Strauss (1825 – 1899) représente l’insouciance, le tourbillon des valses viennoises, la légèreté des opérettes, la gaieté contagieuse. Célie Pauthe prend le contrepied de cette image d’Épinal. La Chauve-Souris ayant été représenté au camp de Terezin en 1944, la metteuse en scène s’inspire de ce contexte pour « se ressaisir de la nécessité vitale, de l’ébriété salvatrice, de la puissance de sublimation qui animent cette musique, et de l’élan de résistance collective qu’elle a pu inspirer. » Une mission délicate que doivent mener les chanteurs et les musiciens de l’Académie de l’Opéra de Paris. Venus de tous les pays sur concours, ces jeunes professionnels sont ici dirigés par Fayçal Karoui.
