Pourquoi avoir voulu porter à la scène un texte inspiré par Jane Austen ?
Céline Devalan : Ses romans m’ont séduite par leur ironie cinglante, leurs dialogues ciselés, les descriptions corrosives des personnages et le comique de situation. Il y a quelque chose de très théâtral dans son écriture. Et Jane Austen, malgré son succès dans le monde anglo-saxon, n’a jamais été montée au théâtre en France. Ses œuvres témoignent avant tout de la condition de la femme à l’aube du XIXème siècle : elle peint des portraits de femmes qui souhaitent acquérir leur indépendance, faire leurs propres choix et chacune atteint ainsi une meilleure connaissance d’elle-même. L’idée est ainsi née de porter à la scène la rencontre d’une femme d’aujourd’hui avec Jane Austen, afin de montrer que la maitrise de son existence et de sa condition féminine constitue une quête permanente et intemporelle.

Qui est Rebecca, le second personnage de la pièce ?
C. D. : De nos jours, Rebecca, restauratrice de tableaux, va nous conduire sur les traces de Jane Austen : elle découvre une lettre en restaurant une miniature. Excitée par cette découverte, elle entame une investigation sur l’auteur de cette mystérieuse lettre. Rebecca établit le lien entre Jane Austen et le spectateur. Et elle est loin de se douter que son investigation aura des répercussions sur sa propre vie. Mettre en scène les destins de ces deux femmes, que deux siècles séparent, nous permet de nous interroger sur le rapport entre création et identité. Et, d’un siècle à l’autre, leurs problématiques se rejoignent.
La vie et l’œuvre de la romancière sont-elles dissociables ?
C. D. : Les deux me semblent intrinsèquement liées. Curieusement, chacun de ses romans suit l’histoire de sa propre vie, ce que nous mettons en exergue dans le spectacle. Comment Jane Austen, qui ne s’est jamais mariée, a-t-elle pu dépeindre avec autant de vérité que de précision la complexité des sentiments amoureux ? Et pourquoi a-t-elle renoncé au mariage et à la maternité qui, à cette époque, étaient la seule possibilité de carrière pour une femme ? L’intrigue du spectacle s’articule autour de ces deux questions majeures. Jane Austen a fait le choix du célibat, a accepté de vivre dans la misère dans le seul but d’écrire, elle a su braver les préjugés de son temps en devenant romancière.
Quels textes de Jane Austen avez-vous utilisés pour construire la pièce ?
C. D. : Nous avons mêlé à sa correspondance des extraits de romans. Ses lettres nous révèlent peu de choses (il n’en reste que 140 sur 2000 estimées, sa sœur Cassandra les ayant brûlées) mais suffisamment pour établir un parallèle entre sa vie et la rédaction de ses œuvres. C’est essentiellement autour de Raison et sentiments, Orgueil et préjugés et Persuasion que s’articule l’histoire.
Le travail d’investigation que vous avez mené en tant qu’auteur de la pièce vous a-t-il aidée pour construire l’interprétation de Jane Austen ?
C. D. : Indéniablement, il m’a permis de construire le personnage, de cerner les enjeux de l’époque, d’appréhender son rapport à l’écriture. Ma curiosité m’a poussée jusqu’en Angleterre et ce pèlerinage m’a aidée à rendre Jane Austen, icône littéraire, beaucoup plus concrète. En fouillant dans son histoire, je me suis aperçue qu’il existait certaines contradictions d’un biographe à l’autre. Mais c’est cette richesse d’informations qui m’a permis de faire des recoupements et de créer ma propre vision de la romancière.
