« Je suis cette troisième génération d’émigrés prise en sandwich entre la soumission du passé et la révolte d’aujourd’hui. Mon écriture a été portée par une mémoire invisible, construite à partir de sensations indicibles. Ainsi est né le récit ». L’auteur des Cendres de Marbella, Hervé Mestron, donne vie à son double, Ziz, celui qu’il n’a pas été mais qu’il aurait pu être en lui prêtant langue. Seul en scène, le comédien Nicolas Zaaboub investit le personnage, anti-héros des temps modernes, comme on défend son « propre fantôme surgi des années passées », « d’une jeunesse à Élancourt et à Trappes, (…), d’un banlieusard issu d’un métissage familial ». Hors de question, pourtant, de s’apitoyer sur son sort. Il s’agit plutôt de « transformer cette force de désespoir en champs / chants des possibles ». La pièce est programmée en diptyque avec celle qui lui fait suite, Gardien du temple, où l’on retrouve Ziz, le jeune dealer des Cendres de Marbella, à sa sortie de prison.
