C’est à l’Opéra comique que fut créé, en 1899, la Cendrillon de Massenet. Cette salle, qui venait de rouvrir, était dotée d’une nouveauté qui fit sensation : l’éclairage à gaz y était remplacé par l’électricité, dont les possibilités – nuances et contrastes, changements d’intensités et de teintes, scintillements inédits – magnifiaient cet opéra, injustement méconnu aujourd’hui. 112 ans plus tard, l’Opéra Comique accueille à nouveau Cendrillon : si l’électricité n’est plus à proprement parler un facteur d’émerveillement, gageons que les talents réunis pour cette création sauront nous enchanter.
Du baroque à Cendrillon
La direction musicale de cette nouvelle production est assurée par Marc Minkowski, et la mise en scène par Benjamin Lazar. Ce dernier s’est révélé en 2004 dans le cadre de la production, par le Poème Harmonique, du Bourgeois gentilhomme, magnifiquement servi par un travail d’orfèvre sur l’art du théâtre au XVIIe siècle (Benjamin Lazar s’est formé auprès d’Eugène Green, spécialiste de la gestuelle et de la voix baroques). A ses côtés, on retrouvera Cécile Roussat, qui avait chorégraphié les intermèdes du Bourgeois gentilhomme. Pratiquant la danse baroque et le mime, la jeune chorégraphe a développé un style vif et théâtral, qui garde du baroque la précision rythmique et la musicalité, tout en introduisant dans ce répertoire des inventions réjouissantes. Une posture, un enchaînement complice entre danseurs suffisent alors à camper des personnages et des situations hautes en couleurs. On est donc bien loin de la danse « accessoire » qui caractérise malheureusement certains opéras : c’est un atout de taille pour cette nouvelle production d’une oeuvre que Marc Minkovski désigne, en une expression évocatrice, comme « l’opéra des métamorphoses ».
